LIVE - From Bulgaria

Live from Bulgaria: Are Europe & Russia on the road to mutual destruction?

I'm currently hanging out in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria -- and just learned that both the president and prime minister here are trying really hard to stay neutral with regard to that endless weird contest to the death between Europe and Russia, using Ukraine as the battlefield wherein these two mammoth forces desperately try to see who can destroy the most stuff first.

It's like watching Godzilla fight King Kong for world domination -- only squashing Kiev instead of squashing Tokyo.  Screw them both.  I'm sick and tired of all this doom-scrolling and war talk.  Time to just relax and enjoy Sofia.  So I signed on for a day tour.

"Sofia was conquered by the Romans back in 130 AD, back when Marcus Aurelius was in charge," said our tour guide.  Holy cow!  One of the greatest generals who ever lived used to walk on the exact same street that I am standing on right now!  Unfortunately, however, there is nothing left of that ancient Roman city but a pile of sad-looking ruins.  So much for empire.

But then the tour guide suddenly started to go on a rant.  "The President and Prime Minister want PEACE!" she exclaimed, her voice dripping with contempt -- talking about peace like it was some terrible and awful thing, almost on the scale of farting in public or torturing babies.  "Our so-called leaders are just trying to side-step the issue!  We can never have peace with Russia!  They attacked Ukraine for no reason!  Putin is a liar!  We must fight them with all that we have!"  Er, okay.  But what, exactly, do you have?  Europe is pretty much running out of weapons.

27 million Russians died fighting the Germans during World War II.  I forget how many other Europeans died back then too.  But how many millions of Europeans and Russians are willing to die on the battlefield today?  Burned to death by drones or buried under missile rubble or shot in the head during front-line combat?  According to my tour guide, all of Bulgaria is willing to die for The Cause.

     What cause?

To make sure that war-mongers, banksters and oligarchs never run out of five-star champagne?

Sofia is a lovely and modern European city, built on top of the ruins of the Roman Empire.  I like Sofia.  I would hate to see it also destroyed in the name of jingoistic polemics and money-grubbing war profiteers in the same way that ordinary Russians and Ukrainians are already taking painfully bloody drone hits -- and European governments are already running out of ammo while going bankrupt trying to keep Voldemort Zelensky supplied with mansions in Italy and Miami.

My tour guide needs to be careful what she wishes for.  Peace is actually a good thing.

PS:   All that noise that we hear coming out of France, Italy and Portugal these days?  That's just the sound of billions and billions of euros being sucked out of Europe and sent off to the killing fields of Ukra$ne.

And as we Americans also listen to the sound of our wonderful country going bankrupt as our wealth is also being vacuumed off into the pockets of war profiteers, will we also start hearing that same noise here -- of desperate citizens not being able to make ends meet?

Landfill: What Greek Jews & Gaza Palestinians have in common

I finally made it to Thessaloniki (and even have learned how it spell it).  Thessaloniki is a Greek port city just thirty miles from the town where Alexander the Great was born.  That guy was amazing, a military genius who never lost a single battle even after eleven hard years on the road -- and he conquered a whole bunch of places too, all the way from Greece to modern-day Pakistan.  He was a hecka lot better than Pete Hegseth for sure!

There is a lot of historical stuff here in Thessaloniki.  Some of these buildings look about as old as Stonehenge.  The only thing that comparably old in America is Mesa Verde.  I'm in my element here.  I love ancient history.  American history just isn't that creepy.

There is a really old cemetery here.  Greek Orthodox.  Almost as fancy as that one in New Orleans.  But where is the Jewish cemetery?  Long story.  There used to be a large and vibrant Jewish community in Thessaloniki.  And then the Nazis came.  First they rounded up all the able-bodied men.  Then some traitorous rabbi convinced many of the remaining Jews to flee to Poland,  "You'll be safe there," he assured them.  And we all know how that turned out.

But the evil fascist Nazis weren't just content to get rid of the living Greek Jews.  No, they had to go after the dead ones as well.  Bulldozers came.  300,000 Jewish graves were converted to landfill.  What kind of horror was that.  Disgusting.

      And yet.

The very same thing is happening right at this very moment in Gaza.  Zionists with bulldozers.  Working overtime.  Turning Gaza cemeteries into landfill.  History repeats itself.  But in a bad way.  And nobody is stopping those deadly bulldozers in Gaza either.

But what really keeps me sleepless at night is not only the tragic desecration of 300,000 Jewish graves by the Nazis -- but also the grim image of thousands and thousands of helpless Palestinians entombed alive in the rubble of their bombed-out apartments buildings as their homes collapse around them under the assault of billions of dollars worth of American explosives that turn these homes into deadly and unescapable sarcophagi.  And then the Zionist bulldozers come.

Sorry to be so ghoulish -- but being buried alive is pretty much my worst nightmare.  Trapped in a confined space, oxygen dwindling fast, no hope of rescue (and no Halloween candy either).

PS:  Today I prayed for peace at Vlatadon, a Greek Orthodox monastery that's as old as dirt.  Lots of ikons to pray to.  Lovely.  I also prayed at a Jewish synagogue here as well.  Would have prayed at a mosque too but it started raining.

Peace is the best thing that any religion or country could ever possibly manufacture.  "Our gross national happiness is far more important than any gross national product," said the King of Bhutan -- and he nailed it.  Sadly however, most of the rest of the world seems to have checked its gross happiness product at the door in favor of war, piracy, evil and desecration.

Tomorrow I'm gonna cover all my bases by climbing Mt. Olympus in order to sacrifice a (small plastic) bull to Zeus and beg him to bring peace to the world (and perhaps whisper some winning lottery numbers in my ear as well).
