One
day after receiving an advance copy of a scathing Greenpeace report,
the Alberta government charged Plains Midstream Canada in connection
with the Rainbow Pipeline oil spill.
The charges come two years
after the April 28, 2011 leak, which released 4.5 million litres of oil
into northern Alberta wetlands near the Lubicon Cree hamlet of Little
Buffalo. It was the largest spill inside Alberta in 35 years.
A
spokeswoman for Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development
said Friday the timing of the charges is not connected to the 16-page
report, which is based on ministerial briefing memos and internal
government reports the environmental group obtained using freedom of
information requests.
